Weddington, NC – On November 4, 2025 The Weddington Warriors beat Purnell Swett 3-0 in their first playoff match at Warrior Stadium. The game began with a Weddington goal in the 12th minute, with Senior Nedal Lagdas scoring the first of his two goals.
The Warriors started the night early with a celebration of their seniors. Each player in the 12th grade got a heartwarming message read out as they walked onto the field with their families and friends by their side. The night was also the first playoff game the Warriors had in store, and they made sure to show off their talent in spectacular fashion.
Nedal Lagdas’ fantastic header resulted from an incredible throw-in from defender Zach Stein. The second goal of the match came with 17 minutes left in the first half after Gabe Hancock made a stunning cross to Lagdas, who volleyed it right past the keeper into the net.
The punishment didn’t end for Purnell Swett as Senior Tyler Riddley scored another goal for Weddington with 8 minutes on the clock in the first half of the match after even more pressure from Weddington’s offense. The Warriors had a hard press on Purnell Swett’s defense and goal for most of the match, with Purnell Swett’s defense successfully being able to repel all Weddington goal-scoring opportunities for the entire second half of the game.
After the match, Senior Owen Carter, who plays center defensive mid (CDM), had this to say: “It was great to be able to honor all of our seniors today, and allow some players to get playing time. We played a good game, but should have scored more of our chances. Finishing our opportunities will be key for the next round at Cuthbertson on Thursday.”
The soccer-Warriors are looking forward to a long-awaited rematch with Cuthbertson in their next playoff match, which will be at Cuthbertson on Nov 6th. Make sure to get tickets soon as the game is a must-watch for all NC soccer fans.
Both teams have the potential to win the state championship, so to see them play each other so early on in the bracket will have massive consequences for the rest of the tournament.
