The Weddington High school women’s track and field team battled Palisades, Independence, and Forest Hills for their second meet of the season on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at the Weddington High school stadium. It was sunny, spirited, and the Warriors gave them a run for their money.
Information about track: Scoring is on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale. Whatever score a runner gets is counted for the school team rather than an individual victory. However, track runners have their own personal records and times.
The track meet on March 11th included hurdles, distance, relays, sprints, high jumps, long jumps, shot put, triple jumps, pole vaults, and discus.
To kick off, the 100m hurdles race for women’s track and field ended with Kamille McGregor, a Weddington hurdler, leaving her competitors in the dust as she took first in hurdles, in 15.3 seconds, earning 10 points for her team.

Despite being the only Weddington hurdles runner in that race, Kamille still kept her hopes up and won. Preparing for something like that; the tricky hurdles and a sprint is certainly difficult, and needs a motivating warmup before taking on the challenge.
“I usually separate myself from everyone, and I say self affirmations, and tell myself that I’m gonna do this, that I’m gonna win this, and I’m gonna do great. And it’s almost like a self hype moment.” she says.
Coach Hinson, the Weddington high school hurdles coach, was proud of the athletes and their hard work. “On the boy’s side, we have a junior, Jack Martin, finally getting a 14- which is a big deal in the hurdles world- and then we have a girl, Kamille McGregor, almost getting her 14…that’s really good. It takes many years to become a good hurdler, and so they’ve put a lot of work in.”
“I used to run in high school. And track is a good paradigm for life,” Coach Hinson explains, “It’s a little scary, and you have to spend a lot of time to develop an expertise in it. And so I want to help young adults learn how to do something scary and become an expert at.”
Overall, the dedication, time, and effort our track team has committed to further shows how the runners exemplify true warriors, and set standards for future trackstars.
