The term “virtual reality” is used to describe a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment. However, I think the term encapsulates our current generation literally: virtual reality. Everything is on our screens, whether it be our entertainment, our communication, and our school or office work. There are some that have careers where the entire job description requires you to be online, glued to your computer screen. The question though, is when most of the entertainment industry requires you to be on a screen, how come the board game industry is booming
Contrary to popular opinion, the rise of social media correlates with the rise of boardgames, rather than leading to its decline. According to an article titled “The Rise of Board Games in Today’s Tech-dominated Culture,” published by the University of Pittsburgh, “The interest in board games is a retaliation against the ubiquity of digital media.” In simpler terms, because of the popularity of digital devices and media, board games are a manner in which humans can maintain social interaction. When everything is so digital, it’s hard to find solace with in-person communication, but board games are an entertaining way in which to interact with both family and friends face-to-face. This is because the board games industry has been booming. People need a break from their devices.
Furthermore, board games are more than just a mere fad. Unlike fidget spinners or hover boards, board games have never truly gone out of style. The first board games were recorded in Mesopotamia, dating back to 5,000 years ago. Board games also grew popular after World War II, according to the University of Pittsburgh, because more income was generated and people were looking for family pastimes. Additionally, board games provide the same thrill that watching a funny reel on social media gives us. When we’re close to winning, we feel tension and excitement, but the important thing is that we’re simultaneously having fun.
At the heart of the matter lies the in person connection that all humans crave, despite the convenience of digital technology. While everyone likes to FaceTime their friends, go to the movies, and play games online, people still need human interaction to feel—well—human. Physical interactions are what define us, and we need recognition and appreciation to thrive. Board games are able to provide humans that, and in an era like the one we’re in today, board games have only become more necessary. So while the “virtual reality” we live in defines our world, board games are still dominating this generation.
