Most of us probably know about the International 2023 Cricket World Cup that’s happening. This is an overview of it, and the final match of the world cup as well. 10 teams every 4 years are selected to contest for a trophy. Each team will go against the other and whoever wins in the multiple series of matches played, goes onto the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final match. This year the matches are being hosted in India and the teams qualified India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
By November 12th, the top 4 teams were decided to participate in the semifinals. India vs. New Zealand and South Africa vs. Australia. On November 15th,2023 India and New Zealand played, and India won and on November 16th, 2023 South Africa played with Australia, and Australia won. Australia has the highest number of wins in the World Cup, but India has the second-highest and is still pretty strong.
Some students at WHS were asked to give their opinion on the Cricket World Cup.
Yug Gokharu mentions “The tremendous amount of skill being displayed is amazing with, in my opinion, India being the forerunner as the batsmen set records and hit centuries every other game and the bowlers drop the other team’s wickets and Australia coming in as a finalist competing against India so we can see which country wins the 2023 International Cricket World Cup. South Africa and New Zealand came in close as well up to the semifinals, but unfortunately, only 2 teams can continue to the final.”
Another student, Rohan Varma comments “The Cricket World Cup has been a tournament dominated by India, Australia, and other countries. Especially India’s fielding and bowling have been exceptional and have been rarely tested during their regular season matches. Their final against Australia will be an interesting matchup, with Australia attempting to get revenge after they lost to India earlier in the season.”
One of the first games between India and Pakistan was sold out entirely and had multiple people watching on news channels that were broadcasting in the UK, India, and other countries, as well as sports streaming apps such as ESPN, Cricinfo, etc. Virat Kohli, a player on the Indian cricket team hit 50 centuries (a century is 100 runs) passing Sachin Tendulkar’s record. The biggest team total scored was South Africa vs Sri Lanka where SA scored 428 runs with 5 wickets.
On November 19th, India lost with Australia scoring 241 and winning by 6 wickets. It was a fairly close match, especially in the beginning, and both teams did well, but only one can go home with the money and the cup. India batted first and started off well, but eventually, India ended their overs with 240 runs Australia started with India taking 3 wickets really fast but over time Australia caught on and won to India with 41 balls left. Congratulations Australia, and good luck to India for next time.
