The varsity women’s soccer team is on the way to the playoffs, according to Coach Powell Williams. With a 10-4-3 record and a 4-0-2 record in the Southern Carolina 4A Conference, the varsity team is first in their conference, and is 12th in the state. Playing a tough match on Thursday against South Mecklenburg, the team’s confidence shot up after a 1-0 win, with the winning goal scored by sophomore Paige Santos.
In the 2023 season, the varsity team made it all the way to the playoff semi-finals until being defeated by Ardrey Kell 7-0. “It was a really difficult moment for us, especially since we had already played Ardrey Kell and lost 2-0 at the beginning of the season,” said junior Caroline Arndt. This year, the team plans to make it all the way to the finals and win it all. With two games remaining in the regular season, the team is practicing harder than ever to win their last two games.
The varsity team is ranked 111th in the nation, with leading scorers Abbi Hoover having scored 8 goals this season and Paige Santos having scored 5. The impressiveness on the team doesn’t just apply to the offensive players, but to the defense as well. Goalie Madison Motto has 57 saves this season, and goalie Genevieve Baptiste has 19.
With just two games left before playoffs begin, a match against Sun Valley (17-4) on May 7th and Cuthbertson (9-6-2) on May 9th, the Warriors are propelled to win these last two matches, as the varsity team has already defeated Sun Valley 2-1 and Cuthbertson 3-1 earlier this season. The team is continuing to practice harder than ever under the supervision of Coach Williams and Assistant Coach Collins in order to be completely prepared for what opponents they may face as playoffs come around the corner.
