Susan Mastin, Weddington High School’s esteemed school nurse, has recently been nominated for the Union County’s Nurse Of The Year Award for the 2023-2024 school year. Ms. Mastin is an experienced nurse who has been taking care of the students in need here at Weddington for 18 years, so there is no surprise that Ms. Mastin has been nominated for such a prestigious award.
“I feel honored. Dr. Kraftson kept coming to me and insisting that I deserve it and I don’t know if I deserve it, but I’m certainly honored. ” Ms. Mastin expressed.
Ms. Mastin has a very personal connection with the students at Weddington. According to Sadie Testa, a sophomore at Weddington, “When I needed her she was very calm and collected and she had everything under control. She comforted me and that’s a key characteristic for a great nurse.”
The Nurse Of The Year Award has been in place since 2004 here in Union County, and of the fifty-three high schools, only one may be selected for this award. Last year’s winner was Jill Fagala from Unionville Elementary. This year, however, Weddington’s Mastin plans on taking the throne as North Carolina’s greatest school nurse.
Additionally, Josh Laffitte, a freshman at Weddington with fond memories of Ms. Mastin. explained,
“On the first day of school I was in PE and we had to run to the bleachers and when I made it to the top, a couple of wasps stung me. I was immediately sent to the nurse and Ms. Mastin cared for me. She removed the stinger and called my mom and I was all good thanks to her. She should get the award”.
Mastin may not be known to all at Weddington High School, but she certainly matters to all the faculty and staff that know her. Hopefully, she will end up winning her well deserved title as Nurse Of The Year.
