The Minecraft movie hit theaters on April 4th, 2025 and earned a massive $163 million domestically and $313 million worldwide in its first week. The film exceeded expectations dramatically and broke records for a video game adaptation. The movie was only projected to make an estimated $70-80 million domestically opening weekend.
Before the Minecraft movie officially came out, there were many mixed opinions about it. Tiktok was filled with users talking about how bad it was going to be, however opinions of the movie have dramatically changed for the better following the official release. The movie has even sparked a trend where watchers yell “chicken jockey” during a scene in the movie and throw their popcorn. During one showing, someone even brought in a live chicken for the scene. Although this is humorous, it is not fair to the movie theater employees to have to clean up these messes.
My personal opinion of the Minecraft movie (without any spoilers of course!) is that it exceeded my expectations greatly. From kids to adults there is something for everyone. There were many innocent “adult jokes” that were appropriate for kids but made the movie entertaining for all age groups. I also appreciated the tribute to “Technoblade,” the Minecraft streamer that tragically passed away in 2022 from cancer. I thought the movie was clever and touching. It had me laughing one moment and then crying the next, and made me want to go back and watch it again just days later.
