Old vs. New Music

Old vs. New Music

Josalin Sutton, General

The music industry is constantly evolving. As times change so does our music taste. From records to iPods, soul to disco, we have changed a lot over the years. With these advancements in technology, and change in modern views the question being asked now is old music better than what we are coming up with today?

The advancements in technology have caused our modern music to be worse than the old tunes we know and love. Because of our fast paced world, and the speed in which we get things no one knows what waiting is like anymore. The second a new album is released we have access to it. This mindset has caused a setback for the music industry. Artists and producers are terrified of being “canceled” in this society of judgment. The minute they put their work, their heart out there for the world it could very well be stomped on. And it does 9 times out of 10. People have become so free with their words and their judgment that they don’t understand the pain they are causing. This cancel culture has caused new artists to be buried before they even start. Hurting the new music of today and putting the focus back on old music.

The change in our modern views has also hurt the music industry. For decades it was all about what’s new and popular. Kids would spend hours trying to find new music at the store or listening on the radio. But with the fast access our generation now has no one wants to look for anything new. We only want to stick with what we know and what’s most popular. This has caused old music to be the focus. Radio stations are known for sticking with the same playlists, and let’s be honest we all keep our favorite songs on repeat too. But what about the amazing talent sitting on our doorstep? We have to stop sacrificing possibility for comfort. In this ever changing, fast paced world It feels as though the music industry has slowed down more than ever.
