As parents and students are well aware, the next few months will be a busy time of college readiness testing, including the SAT and ACT exams. Many students may wonder: What are the differences between the tests? How do I study? This article will address these relevant questions to help students plan and prepare well.
SAT Testing
The SAT has two sections: Math and Reading/Writing. The test comprises 98 total questions—54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. Students are given 64 minutes for the Reading and Writing section (71 seconds per question) and 70 minutes for the Math section (95 seconds per question). Final scores range from 400-1600. To prepare, students are encouraged to take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), which helps identify academic strengths and weaknesses. The PSAT is ideal for students in grades 8-10 who want an early introduction to the SAT format.Websites such as Khan Academy and the College Board (the test administrator) are great study tools which offer study plans and official practice materials.
ACT Testing
The ACT has recently undergone updates that students should note. As of 2025, the required sections are English, Reading, and Math, with an optional Science section that is still highly recommended. Including Science, the exam lasts approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes excluding breaks. The ACT contains 131 questions (or 171 including Science). Students will be allotted a total of around 42 seconds per English question, 67 seconds per Math question, 67 seconds per Reading, and 60 seconds per Science question. Final scores range from 1-36. To prepare, students can take the PreACT, an excellent diagnostic tool for grades 8-9. A separate version for grade 10 students is also available to familiarize themselves with the actual test’s pace and format. The official site of test administrators, ACT.org offers a free study guide, test-taking strategies, and even past test questions.
