In recent years, there has been a controversial global rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). While AI has introduced numerous helpful advancements, it has also introduced major hurdles—particularly regarding education. One of the most pressing concerns is academic integrity, as schools across the country face increasing cases of dishonesty linked to the usage of AI platforms. All subjects have been severely affected by these new series of changes, but a subject especially affected by this trend is English.
At Weddington High School, English teacher Ms. Difronzo has been outspoken about the need to balance the opportunities and risks AI presents. “I understand AI embodies benefits for numerous fields, especially outside of English,” she explained. “However, society should protect and harness the beauty and nuances of human thought and creation, instead of muting our potential for an immediate replacement.”
To promote originality in her classroom, Ms. Difronzo emphasizes the gifts of expression and student imagination.“I consistently accentuate the beauty and the reward in student ownership and personal creativity in every task, assignment, and project,” she shared.
Her solution to combating the threats posed by AI is to foster a safe and supportive learning environment. “Students need to know they have the greatness within them; they just need the opportunity to unveil it in a productive, safe, and welcoming environment.”
As Weddington High continues to adapt to an evolving world, Ms. Difronzo’s dedication reflects the resilience and flexibility of the Warrior community in navigating both the setbacks and opportunities brought by new technology.
