Spring is finally here, and so are the chicks, but did you know that they’ve been here for weeks? The chicks sold at tractor supply are day-old, fast selling and available from late February and steadily provided every week until late March or early April. After that the chicks will be available periodically throughout summer. There are so many breeds you can find there but don’t forget, if you need a specific breed you can always find a breeder online or in the community and get fertilized eggs or chicks safely shipped!
Chicks take a moderate amount of maintenance and care however with the right breeds they will provide for you from the time that they start laying, which depending on breed can be anywhere from 4 months to a year. Young chicks often need a heat lamp safe enclosure, food, water, and sometimes enrichment during their first few months, slowly they make their way into their teen dinosaur looking phase and eventually you have beautiful laying hens by then you will need a run, a coop and nesting boxes among other things.
Be sure to research your breeds and know what to expect with chickens so you can deal with any problems quickly without endangering the flock. Also Be aware of the restrictions in your area, some zoning rules don’t allow roosters, some restrict any chickens at all!
