As the Weddington Warriors head out to their first meet of the season, many are eager to finally hit the track again. Countless athletes are ready to show off how hard they’ve worked throughout the winter season and others who have worked during the off-season.
Athletes in the 4×100 meter race were Somto Emeka, Kamille McGregor, Gabriella Exantus, and to finish it off, Alana Hill. Kamille Mcgregor started off the relay team with a strong start. Although the handoff between the first and second person wasn’t the best, Somto Emeka was still able to keep up with the crowd and hand it off to Gabriella Exuntas who then handed it off to Alana hill to finish it off. The team came in second place in the overall meet and received medals for their hard work and dedication.
Somto Emeka touched on this relay a bit more by saying, “During the 4 by 100 meter exchange zones you and your teammates have to be one person in order to have a successful race.”
In the 4×200 meter race, Somto Emeka, Layla Hill, Ifeoma Ochako, and Shayna De Fazio started with an amazing lead. With Shayna in the first leg, she passed it off to Ifeoma and were comfortably resting in first place. As the baton lands in Layla Hill’s hand, she opens the gap between the other teams more and more. As the baton is passed into the final leg and wins the relay with an amazing finish. The team finished with a time of one minute and 47 seconds. They received first place medals for their event and went home happy and satisfied.
Ifeoma Ochako commented on this race after some thought; “It was a good race and when our hand-offs improve, we can do even better.”
Coach Montenaro had made a positive comment on the teams performance by saying; “Good Job today folks, had some PRs, some regional qualifiers, and some lessons learned. Building block, now we need to add the next layer.”
