On February 14th, 2024, a day of celebration of victory became a day of terror and loss. The streets of Kansas City were buzzing due to the Kansas City Chiefs recent domination in the 58th Super Bowl. Thousands gathered to celebrate the amazing day, and the streets of Kansas City had never been more alive. Then sometime shortly after 2:00 PM, gunshots were fired and nothing but chaos was in the minds of Chiefs fans.
Kansas City’s Chief of Police, Stacy Graves, informed the media stating, “At least half our victims were under the age of 16… oldest victim is 47.”
As of today, there are two people currently charged with murder for the events. Their names are Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays. Their current bond is a whopping one million dollars and their sentence will be revealed soon, but as of right now, they’re recovering in the hospital after also receiving gunshot wounds. The police have also identified some of the victims of the shooting including news reporter/podcast host Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who was the first victim to be officially announced dead.
Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce felt nothing but sympathy for the families of the victims, as he stated, “We just wanted to say our hearts go out to all of the victims, their families, Chiefs Kingdom, and really all of Kansas City that was really there on a day to try and celebrate the community.”
Jason Kelce, Travis’ brother, also added, “It’s unfortunate and deeply tragic the events that occurred”.
While the tragic event is most certainly devastating, it’s very good to hear that some of the victims are recovering and people such as the Kelce brothers have gathered over $850,000 in donations towards the cause.
It’s nice to know that goodness in the world can be shown even in the most difficult times.
