Weddington High School men’s basketball hosted Marvin Ridge for senior night on February 16th. The rivalry between these two schools is one of the most intense in the county, fueled by this extreme competition in various sports and academic achievements. As this year’s senior night game showed, that rivalry was as strong as ever.
Weddington Senior Player Matthew Powers stated, “Senior Night was so much fun and it’s always exciting to beat our biggest rivals in front of an electric home crowd.”
The Warriors and the Mavericks both came in very confident hoping to take the win. The student sections on both sides were filled with cheers and laughter. With a final score of 78-52, the Warriors solidified their dominance in the rivalry. The atmosphere in the gym was electric, with fans from both schools on their feet, cheering on their team.
Throughout the game, the Weddington Warriors displayed exceptional teamwork and skill, with star players Kj Younger and AJ Cook leading the charge and making exceptional plays. Kj Younger led the team with 24 points and Aidan Cook with 17 more. The Marvin Ridge Mavericks fought hard, but they were unable to keep up with the Warriors fast-paced offense and solid defense. As the final buzzer sounded, the Weddington High School student section erupted in cheers and celebration, while the Mavericks fans filed out of the gym disappointed and embarrassed.
Despite the intense rivalry between the two schools, both teams showed great sportsmanship and respect for each other throughout the game. The victory for Weddington only added fuel to the players, and now they strive to reach the top of the championship.
